What is Otolaryngology?

Otolaryngology is a specialty that focuses on the ears, nose, and throat. It is also called otolaryngology-head and neck surgery because specialists are trained in both medicine and surgery. An otolaryngologist is often called an ear, nose, and throat doctor, or an ENT for short. An “ENT” doctor and an “otolaryngologist” are the same thing; they are simply different names for the same medical specialty focused on the ears, nose, throat, and related structures of the head and neck.

An Otolaryngologist specializes in the diagnosis and management of diseases involving the:

  • Sinuses (Sinus infections)
  • Oral Cavity/Mouth (Cysts, saliva problems, thyroid)
  • Throat (Trouble swallowing, tonsils, lumps)
  • Nose (Difficulty breathing, allergies)
  • Larynx (Voice box)
  • Neck (Masses, lumps)
  • Face (Lumps, saliva gland)
  • Sleep apnea

It is also called Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery because specialists are trained in both medicine and surgery.

Why would I need to see an ENT?
